Living Off the Land...Technologically

So, this may seem like a contradiction since the natural idea of providing for your own livelihood involves some farming, hunting, gathering and whatnot. These skills are not often thought of in the same context as things that have to do with wirelessly connected, battery operated devices. They really are polar opposites. So the next idea that comes to mind via this title might imply the use of a GPS device, a generator and a laptop, but this isn’t what I am referring to either. However, using this type of a setup to reach a remote location for the purpose of carrying out what I am about to explain brings this idea to another level! What I am getting at would be closer to the meaning of the former idea. This is in the sense of relying on the geographic surroundings of wherever you are, not to provide food but a livelihood through the use of technology. In the last couple of years, I have started to move in a new direction from the previous few years in a couple of areas.

Noggle Media recognized by local alternative school

I recently received this letter from Alternative Youth Activities (AYA) as I helped them create a test curriculum for students in Media Appreciation and Creation.
Alice Carlson who is the head of the program was instrumental in reaching out to the community with an idea to create a video through Public Access television. Through this meeting, Alice and I decided to create this class and curriculum rather than just have students do a one time video for fund raising.
Hopefully, AYA will be able to continue with this project and build on what has been started.

HIGH DEFINITION MEETS THE CONSUMER VIDEO CAMERA

In an industry that is known for and expected to change, consumer electronics are as commonplace today as a rolling pin was in the 50's. Try and find a rolling pin in most American homes today!

Among the computers, televisions, and media players, the digital camera and recently video camera or "camcorder" are available today for "dirt cheap". While this isn't news, what is news is that the price versus features and quality have crashed into each other with such force that I still can't believe it myself. On with the story...

Yesterday was Father's Day and my family did the usual picnic as well as a barbecue. While on the picnic at a park, I decided that since the kids are getting older, I needed to gather as many memories as I can. I pulled out my newly purchased Jazz Elite HDV188 Hybrid video camera (www.jazzcameras.com) and found myself shooting video of the three kids blowing bubbles and chasing them in front of me. Now, I knew that this camera is High Definition (1280 x 720) and have shot many things with it including an experiment of my home town. Goto www.vimeo.com (search for Coos Bay in their site), I had forgotten how unbelievable this gadget really is. It has a built in HDMI port right in the camera which connects to your HD television directly to playback at the best possible quality. As I watched what I shot earlier that day, I was once again blown away with what I was seeing. The picture in native wide screen played back on my 32 inch Panasonic LCD screen in amazing quality when you consider one simple fact. The camera came from Walmart and cost less than $150!!! For the price of two tanks of gas, I had a picture quality that was many times better than my first mini dv camcorder without the cost or hassle of the setup or carrying a camera bag.

Now, I will say that while I shoot video professionally, my Sony 3 chip camera is still far superior when it comes to the fact of artifacting in a side by side comparison. At many times the price of the HDV188, it should! But for price, convenience, ease of use and disposability, all things considered...this thing is amazing! I can't wait to see what the future holds for these things.

Am I saying that you can expect to buy a Mercedes on a Kia lot? No, but you don't expect something like that to happen when purchasing a vehicle so why would you here? Keeping things in perspective, the average family consumer on a budget will find this camera fits the bill. At this price, you can buy two and leave one in the glove box of the car to never miss a family memory. I guess that is the point!

If you have ever used the camera on your cell phone because it was all you had with you, this thing is the same size, probably less money than the average cell phone and will BLOW IT AWAY in quality!

Try playing your camera phone video back on your HDTV and see what happens...

Noggle Media has just completed the revision of it's new website.

Noggle Media has just completed the revision of it's new website.

This past week, the final piece was added which is "a message from Jay". This is a video piece where owner, Jay Noggle gives some reflection and information on changes in media distribution regarding the internet. The link to this video is found on the home page of the site, www.nogglemedia.com. Several bits of information can be found there that are specifically targeted at the small or "micro" business owner.

One of these bits refers to how a business that uses the internet for marketing needs to take the creation of a dialogue approach into consideration when using the web these days. Noggle says it is no longer relevant to use the old "monologue" approach to marketing.

For more information, goto www.nogglemedia.com/message.html.

Noggle Video Productions is now Noggle Media

It all started three days prior to the New Millennium...

That was the day that I started my new job as an Account Exec at a local TV Station. It was there, that I knew I was bitten by the advertising bug. It was also there that I had the opportunity to meet many local business owners and to learn from them their wants and needs in regards to marketing. After nearly two years there, I left and started my own Advertising Agency where I specialized in producing TV spots for local network and cable television.

It was about this time that the marketing machine had started to change and "shift". The new paradigm was introduced as people like Seth Godin and other Gurus were talking about things like Being Remarkable and as such, reaching "The Long Tail".

Now, enter You Tube and the proliferation of broadband in the US and the stage is now set for "micro-business" to effectively take advantage of this new technology and compete in the marketplace as never before!

As the web has transformed from an information tool to a communications tool, Noggle Video Productions (started in 2005) has also transformed into today's Noggle Media.

Some say, the age of the Internet is just coming to be. In this very exciting time my hope is to help you to communicate in whatever capacity with those you need to reach by way of video, audio, web and or image.

I look forward to to every opportunity to discuss this with you on a personal level.

Sincerely,

Forest Jay Noggle

A TV Station, a Radio Station and a Newspaper... In a Box!

A TV Station, a Radio Station and a Newspaper... In a Box!

So what do these three forms of communication have in common? Many things, but for starters they are each a unique distribution channel for content. Their uniqueness is probably best known for the following: Newspaper to deliver the news, Radio to deliver music and TV to deliver sitcoms, dramas and movies.

What is even more important in what these three distribution channels share is the fact that in their infancy, the multitudes that they came to serve were the nay-Sayers that doubted their beginning success.

Well, things change and in this "Internet Age" the distribution channel has changed once again. Now in the last one hundred years, TV, Radio and the Newspaper have still been able to keep an audience once the new delivery channel came to be. For instance, when Radio first started to deliver the news, the Newspaper didn't fold up and go away. The same was also true for TV coming on the scene to deliver our "entertainment" in a new way. The very idea of a family continuing to gather around the radio at night in the 50's was unheard of. But Radio was also in an evolutionary process with the whole "Hi-Fi" craze and soon to follow that, the FM broadcast to bring us our favorite music (and in the last couple of decades, Talk Radio). So be it today, each of these three are still around to offer what they do best in delivering our news, music and favorite shows.

And this is where things as we know them are about to change! How? Never before has one distribution channel had the ability to deliver all three types of content from one source! The Newspaper had pictures sure, but they couldn't move. The Radio had sound, but no pictures (let alone moving ones). The TV could bring you news (with moving pictures) but never really worked as a commuting device. Not to mention the issue with Television of having to watch what you wanted when the network wanted you to see it!

Now, for the first time ever, each of these types of content are available in one box... The Internet connected Computer. The Internet can deliver our news in text, audio or video. There is an Internet Radio Station for any kind of genre you can think of. And with the advance and popularity last year of You Tube, you can even see some of your favorite TV programs online as well.

So what is my point on all of this? It's simple. All of this content is delivered through a website. Therefore, if your business has a website, it has the beginnings of it's own Newspaper, Radio Station and TV Station in a box. The Internet is the delivery mechanism that you can use to market your business and remove the middle man. In the past, not everyone had access to their own distribution channel to market their goods and services. NOW YOU DO!

The hang up is how do you get your prospects and customers to "tune in" to your channel? You might ask yourself, "Who is ever going to find my little website in all those other sites?" Yeah, sure, it is called the "World Wide Web" for a reason but that is not to be feared, just understood.

More on that later...

The Power of Television? Nah, The Power of VIDEO!!!

With the big tech story of last year being that of You Tube and all that it has gone through, I started to think of just where I have been in the last few years and that thought process lead me to this. As a previous Television Sales Exec, we were constantly selling our clients on the "Power of Television"! And, at the time, I truly believed that. Now, with the Internet being what it is, THE POWER is in VIDEO via the Internet.
I have seen the number one issue and objection to what I was selling overcome with Internet Video. What was that objection? It was the ongoing schedule payment that was required to keep your message out in front of the public.
Now I have to agree that with Broadcast Television (even Cable) there is a larger audience, but that is about to change.
With fewer and fewer people watching television in the 18-25 year old demographic, this change is taking place sooner than expected. It isn't that this demo isn't watching anything, they are. But their device of choice is the PC, not the TV. Content is now diversified and includes the Network Dramas and Sitcoms we are accustomed to but also user created content including humorous shorts, and personal documentary pieces that mean something to the small group of viewers that are interested in that subject. Multiply this by the number of subjects of interest that there are in the world and now the possibilities of content are limitless.
The reason for this Paradigm Shift is mainly due to the technology coming of age for a user to create their own content and share it with friends. Computers and Camcorders combined with the Internet mean more than just lots of folks with a new hobby; it means a select few are no longer in charge of deciding what the masses in the media are watching. This is crucial to how we as consumers now choose to watch (or not watch) what we want. You can see where I am going on this from here.

So, what is the Power of Video? It is the "next best thing to being there"! How we get to see that video, or the distribution channel, is no longer a problem. Soon, Television and the Internet will be accessible via one device.

What this means to the small business is that the prohibiting cost factor of the past is no longer an issue.
